AUSTRIA - Zurs (Arlberg)
Surrounded by breathtaking snow-covered peaks, Zurs am
Arlberg is a picturesque village in the Tyrolean Alps, 240 km (149 miles) east of
Zurich. For a tiny town, it bears a formidable reputation as one of the world’s best and most exclusive ski destinations. Its elegant atmosphere and “talcum powder” snow have made it a favorite of international celebrities.
Guests at the Thurnhers Alpenhof can enjoy ski-in/ski-out access to Zurs’ famed slopes, then retreat to the comfort of this family-run inn for a cozy après-ski by the fire, gourmet dinner or underwater massage in the Alpenhof’s indoor pool. A sauna, Turkish steam bath and solarium restore warmth to chilled limbs, while a fitness corner staffed by the resort’s own personal trainer, helps tone guests up for another active day.
Zurs’ location in a sunny valley 1,720 meters (5,642 feet) high guarantees more snowfall than most other Alpine destinations. Taking full advantage of the region’s prime ski conditions are 260 km (161+ miles) of groomed trails served by 83 lifts, with plenty of slopes for skiers of all levels. The most advanced skiers can test their skills on 180 km (112 miles) of off-piste trails.
In addition to downhill skiing, winter sports enthusiasts will find plenty of other pastimes in Zurs, including cross-country skiing, snowboarding, heli-skiing, tobogganing, paragliding snowshoeing and ice-skating. Horse-drawn sleigh rides add a touch of enchantment.
In the evenings, Zurs’ streets, lined with quaint white stucco buildings, come to life as visitors invigorated by a day on the slopes fill the bars and outdoor patios.
Zurs is strictly a winter destination, and nearly all of its hotels, including the Alpenhof, close for the summer.
