ITALY - Verona
Immortalized in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, Verona is a charming city in northeastern Italy, just a short distance from Venice. Visitors will find Verona rich in appeals, from well-preserved Roman ruins (notably the Arena), a wealth of important artworks, and the tourist attraction of Juliet’s House. While the house has no true historic link to Shakespeare’s tale, its balcony draws countless young lovers, who leave romantic messages by the droves within the tiny courtyard.
Built in the 1st Century AD, the historic Arena continues to function as an amphitheater today, and serves as an unforgettable setting for operatic performances. Also dating back to Roman times are the Piazza delle Erbe, site of the city’s Roman-era Forum, and Porta Borsari, the remains of a Roman gate. The 14th-century Castelvecchio houses Verona’s art museum, and there are countless historic churches throughout the city. From the top of the famed Lamberti Tower, visitors are rewarded with spectacular views across Verona.
Other favorite activities inVerona include shopping along the Via Mazzini and Corso Porta Borsari and sampling fine Italian fare at the restaurants that line the Carega block.
Overnight travelers will find Verona’s most exclusive accommodations at the Due Torri Hotel, an Elite-member hotel whose famous guests have included Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Maria Callas.
