ITALY - Island of Sardinia

The second largest island in the
Mediterranean,
Sardinia tempts with its pristine beaches, enchanting villages and important archaeological sites. Its indisputable allure has been immortalized in D.H. Lawrence’s “The Sea and
Sardinia.”
The Costa Smeralda, or
Emerald
Coast, is an exclusive tourist destination that draws the famous and affluent from
Europe and the
Middle East to its spectacular beaches and well-planned towns. Among its archaeological treasures are Li Muri and the Tomba dei Giganti (Giants’ Tomb). It is also the base for the annual Sardinia Cup sailing regatta held in September.
The town of
Posada intrigues with its link to the mysterious ancient site of Feronia. Appearing in maps from the time of Ptolemy to the Middle Ages, it has since disappeared and its exact location is the subject of debate. While several recent studies put it in the suburb of Santa Caterina, others contend that the Roman harbor at San Giovanni di Posada is a more likely site.
Sardinia’s crystal-clear waters make it an ideal destination for water sports enthusiasts, while inland, hikers and mountain climbers can explore the Gennargentu mountain range in the
province of
Nuoro.
