The Engadine: St. Moritz and Pontresina

The world-renowned resort town of St. Moritz, a favorite winter playground for Hollywood stars and royalty, is perched at the highest point of Switzerland’s famed Engadine Valley. Just a few kilometers away is the lesser-known but equally appealing village of Pontresina

The Engadine is known for exceptional winter sports. St. Moritz has played host to two Olympic games – in 1928 and 1948 – and its slopes include 350 km of snow-covered runs. Every other winter sport imaginable is available in the region as well, from cross-country skiing to ice skating to Olympic bobsled and Cresta runs.

The Engadine is equally appealing in the summer. Among its many warm-weather diversions are tennis and golf, hiking in the National Park, bike riding, swimming and fishing in several lakes, and excursions to nearby attractions, including mountaintop vantage points, the Italian village of Tirano, and more.

St. Moritz appeals to its well-heeled patrons with world-class dining and plenty of shopping. Its international boutiques rival those of Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive and Zurich’s Bahnhofstrasse. The Casino St. Moritz and numerous nightclubs and bars keep the night scene lively. In Pontresina, the main shopping street is the Via Maistra, where visitors will find everything from fine chocolates and cheeses to fair trade gifts.

Since the 19th century, two legendary hotels have served as the region's center for sports and social activities -- the Kulm Hotel in St. Moritz and its sister, the Grand Hotel Kronenhof, in Pontresina.

A 3.5-hour train ride from Zurich, the Upper Engadine is linked by rail to the rest of Switzerland. The world-famous Glacier Express offers riders awe-inspiring views on its run from the mountains of the Bernina Pass to the Matterhorn.
