ENGLAND - London
Among the world’s most influential and cosmopolitan cities, London is home to a diverse range of cultures and a rich history that dates back to the Romans. It is the capital of the U.K., the most populous city in the European Union, and a leader in international finance, world politics and the arts.
51 Buckingham Gate offers London visitors stylish pied a terre accommodations and a central location in historic St. James Court, just steps from Buckingham Palace.
Tourist attractions abound, and are located mainly in Central London, an area that encompasses the historic City of London; the vibrant theaters, shops and restaurants of the West End; Westminster, home to Westminster Abbey, St. James’s Palace and Buckingham Palace, where visitors flock for the daily Changing of the Guard; the shops, entertainment and Royal Opera House at Covent Garden; and the world-class museums of Kensington and Chelsea. London’s top department stores and boutiques are found in Mayfair and Knightsbridge.
Among the city’s many iconic historic sites are St. Paul’s Cathedral; the Tower of London, where Elizabeth I was once imprisoned; and the clock tower of Big Ben, rising above the banks of the River Thames alongside the House of Parliament. A much more recent addition to the skyline, but every bit as iconic is the British Airways London Eye, sometimes called the Millennium Wheel, which is the largest observation wheel in the world.
Some of the world’s most important art collections are housed in London’s galleries, among them the National Gallery at Trafalgar Square, the National Portrait Gallery, the Tate Britain and Tate Modern. The British Museum is home to more than seven million artifacts from every region of the world. Other major museums include the Science Museum, Natural History Museum and Victoria and Albert Museum.
London’s Wimbledon district is home to the annual Wimbledon Championships each June, the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament. |
